6-Year-Old Boy from Newtownards Saves Mum After Collapsing at Home

Newtownards, Northern Ireland – July 19, 2025 – A brave 6-year-old boy is being hailed a hero after his quick thinking helped save his mother’s life when she suddenly collapsed at their home earlier this week.
Little Jack Thompson from Newtownards sprang into action on Monday afternoon when his mum, Emma Thompson, fell unconscious in their living room. Despite his young age, Jack remained calm and used his mum’s mobile phone to call emergency services.
According to reports, Jack was able to clearly explain the situation to the 999 operator, give his home address, and even unlock the door for paramedics when they arrived.
Emma, 34, had suffered a severe diabetic episode. Thanks to Jack’s fast actions, paramedics were able to treat her in time and transport her safely to the Ulster Hospital, where she is now recovering well.
Emergency service workers and doctors have praised Jack’s calmness and courage. “For a 6-year-old to do what he did under such stress is extraordinary,” said paramedic Lisa Donnelly, one of the first responders on the scene. “He followed instructions perfectly, stayed by his mum’s side, and helped us get to her quickly.”
Jack’s father, Chris Thompson, who was at work during the incident, said he couldn’t be prouder. “Jack’s always been a bright boy, but what he did for Emma—he’s our little superhero. He saved her life.”
Local community members have also expressed their admiration, with messages of support pouring in for the young hero. The local primary school Jack attends is reportedly planning a special assembly next week to celebrate his bravery.
As Emma continues her recovery, she says she feels incredibly lucky. “I don’t remember anything after feeling dizzy, but knowing Jack was there and knew what to do gives me so much comfort. I’m just so proud of him.”
Jack, meanwhile, remains humble about the ordeal. When asked how he knew what to do, he simply said, “Mummy told me what to do if she ever got poorly. I just wanted to help her.”
