Tragic Case of Child Neglect in Oklahoma City Leads to Arrests
Oklahoma City, OK — Authorities in Oklahoma City have arrested a young couple following a distressing welfare check that uncovered severe child neglect. Police were called to a residence on September 12, 2024, after concerns were raised about the well-being of two young boys living in the home.
Upon arrival, officers were met with a locked home and a chaotic scene. Attempts to gain entry were initially thwarted, but once inside, police discovered two boys, aged three and four, locked in an upstairs room in extremely unsanitary conditions. The children were found naked, covered in feces, and without furniture, leading officers to suspect they may have attempted to escape the room.
Officers also reported a significant infestation of cockroaches and flies throughout the home. The family’s 11-month-old daughter was found in a similarly neglected state, with her diaper in dire need of changing and traces of cockroach droppings on her body.
Authorities took immediate action, removing the children and calling paramedics to ensure their health and safety. Reports indicate that the boys appeared developmentally delayed and traumatized by their environment, unable to provide basic information about themselves.
The children’s stepfather, 24-year-old Dakota Dodd, and mother, 22-year-old Brianna Freeman, were both arrested on three counts each of felony child neglect. During interviews, conflicting accounts were provided: Freeman claimed the children spent no more than two hours per day in the upstairs room, while Dodd admitted the boys were often confined there for up to 12 hours, including overnight.
The police report details previous incidents of violence within the family, including a prior attack by a family member with known mental health issues. Neighbors and relatives expressed that warnings had been made in the past about potential dangers, but no preventative measures had been taken.
Both Dodd and Freeman pled not guilty and have since been released on bond. The children are currently in temporary custody and receiving medical care. Authorities continue to investigate the home environment and will pursue additional legal action as necessary.
This case highlights the ongoing need for vigilance in protecting children from neglect and abuse.
