Authorities have released disturbing surveillance footage that captures 34-year-old DeCarlos Brown, the man accused in the brutal stabbing death of Ukrainian refugee Iryna Zarutska, just moments after the fatal incident.
The footage, obtained from a nearby security camera, reportedly shows Brown walking calmly away from the scene, located in a quiet residential neighborhood, shortly after the attack occurred. Law enforcement sources say the video is a key piece of evidence in the ongoing investigation.
Zarutska, 38, had fled to the United States seeking safety from the war in Ukraine. She was found with multiple stab wounds and pronounced dead at the scene. Neighbors say she was well-liked and had recently begun working at a local community center that supports displaced families.
Brown was taken into custody hours later and is currently being held without bond. He faces charges of first-degree murder. Investigators have not yet revealed a motive for the attack but confirmed that the suspect and victim were known to each other.
“This was a senseless act of violence against a woman who had already endured so much,” said Police Chief Amanda Reyes during a press briefing. “We are committed to ensuring justice is served.”
The community is mourning Zarutska’s death, with local leaders planning a candlelight vigil later this week in her memory.
The investigation remains active, and authorities are urging anyone with additional information to come forward.
