A man forcibly dragged a woman behind a monument, and after a while, she staggered away. This terrible scene was witnessed by a person watching a Key West webcam. The witness lived 1,600 miles away in Boston and immediately called the Key West police.
At first, the police thought the call might be a prank, but the caller insisted: “I know this sounds crazy, but I’m at work, and I was watching the Southernmost Point webcam. I could almost swear I saw someone get assaulted.”
The police report stated that the caller, who made the long-distance 911 call while watching the webcam, described seeing the woman fall flat on her face. Authorities were able to log into the webcam and provide the footage to the police department and the State Attorney’s office.
The police arrested the attacker, Kerry Calvin Gossard, 37, an Uber driver. Justice in Key West was upheld thanks to the sharp-eyed citizen watching from afar in Boston. The suspect pleaded guilty to sexual assault charges and was sentenced to ten years in prison just yesterday.
