Yes, you read that right — and it’s just as awkward as it sounds.
Choosing a baby’s name is no small task. Most parents spend months carefully weighing options, double-checking meanings, and even saying the name out loud to avoid any embarrassing slip-ups. But even with all that planning, sometimes mistakes happen — and comedian Amy Schumer learned this the hard way.
When her son was born, Schumer wanted to honor her close friend, fellow comedian Dave Attell. To do so, she gave her baby the middle name Attell. On paper, it seemed like a sweet tribute. But combined with the first name she and her husband chose — Gene — it created a rather unfortunate result.
That’s right. Gene Attell sounded just like “genital.”
The slip didn’t go unnoticed for long. Speaking on a podcast, Schumer admitted that once the couple realized the unintentional pun, they knew they had to fix it. “It’s now Gene David Fischer,” she explained. “It was Gene Attell Fischer, but we realized that we by accident named our son ‘genital.’”
The actress took the revelation in stride, laughing at the situation as only a comedian could. Fans online were quick to join in on the joke, while also sympathizing with the very relatable parenting blunder. After all, naming a child is already stressful enough without having to consider every possible awkward combination.
Thankfully, the name change came early. By swapping Attell for David, Schumer spared her son years of inevitable teasing in school and herself from a lifetime of interview questions about the mishap.
Now officially Gene David Fischer, the little one can grow up free from the unintended punchline — though the story of his first name will likely live on as one of the funniest celebrity baby-name blunders in recent memory.
