Public breastfeeding remains a highly controversial topic, often generating much discussion. Why does an act as natural as breastfeeding provoke so many reactions, particularly in a world that claims to be liberal and where, it must be said, bodies are frequently exposed?

Constantly stirring up controversy, exclusion and criticism, American Mara Martin broke this cycle by parading with her little daughter Aria, whom she was breastfeeding, in the middle of the show.
It’s safe to say that Mara has been the subject of numerous reports lately, following Swimwear Fashion Week in Miami last July. The 32-year-old model, who posed for Sports Illustrated, took to the stage breastfeeding her five-month-old baby. The photograph, touching for some and shameful for others, appeared virally in the media and on social media and quickly sparked a new debate.

Mara shared her happiness on her Instagram, saying, “There are no words that can adequately express how I feel after being selected for the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Show. I am amazed that my daughter and I are in the news for what I do every day. I am truly grateful to be a part of promoting breastfeeding and showing other women that we can all do it. This is my daily life as a mom.”

The feedback on social media was undeniable. Between praise and positive reactions on one side, and total rejection on the other, with all the criticism and attacks that this entails, Mara managed to remain calm and proud of having succeeded, in her own way, in trying to “normalize” breastfeeding.
