In recent weeks, a disturbing trend has been reported in various neighborhoods and cities: plastic bottles placed on the hoods of parked cars. What may initially seem like a harmless prank could actually be a sign of something far more sinister. Authorities are warning the public to be cautious, as these bottles may be used as traps to distract or target individuals for theft, assault, or even kidnapping.
The tactic, according to law enforcement sources, involves placing a bottle in a conspicuous location — such as on the hood, windshield, or under the tire — in hopes that the car owner will pause to remove it. In that moment of distraction, perpetrators may attempt to approach the victim or access the unlocked vehicle.
This method has allegedly been used in several carjacking incidents across North America and Europe. While not yet widespread, the technique has gained enough attention on social media to prompt official statements from some police departments. Some videos circulating online show individuals discovering the bottles, inspecting them with curiosity, and then being ambushed moments later. Although not all of these videos are verified, the potential threat is being taken seriously.
Detective Laura Mitchell of the City Police Department explains:
“Criminals are becoming increasingly creative and opportunistic. Something as simple as a plastic bottle can be used to lure someone into a vulnerable position. We urge the public not to remove any suspicious objects from their cars themselves. Instead, get to a safe place and call the police.”
Experts in crime prevention say this tactic plays on human psychology. People are naturally curious and often assume the object was placed accidentally or as a joke. The hesitation and attention given to the bottle provide just enough time for someone nearby to take advantage.
In addition to bottles, reports have surfaced about other unusual tactics being used to distract drivers — including notes under windshield wipers, cash left on the ground near the door, or items tied to the rear of the vehicle. The underlying goal is often the same: get the driver out of the car and off guard.
Here are some safety tips recommended by law enforcement:
- Stay aware of your surroundings when approaching or leaving your vehicle.
- Do not engage with or remove suspicious items from your car, especially if you’re in an isolated area.
- Lock your doors immediately upon entering your vehicle.
- Report any suspicious activity to the local authorities or security personnel nearby.
- If you feel unsafe, drive to the nearest police station or busy public area.
While not every bottle on a car hood is a threat, it’s better to be safe than sorry. Even if it turns out to be a harmless prank, your personal safety should always come first.
Citizens are encouraged to share this warning with family members, especially young drivers or individuals who may be unaware of such tactics. Social media has played a key role in spreading awareness, but it’s also important to verify facts and not spread unnecessary panic.
As urban areas continue to deal with rising petty crimes and increasingly bold criminal behavior, public awareness remains one of the most effective defenses. Simply knowing what to look for — and how to respond — can make all the difference.
If you come across a bottle or any suspicious object on your vehicle, don’t ignore it — but don’t try to handle it yourself either. Your safety is more important than your schedule or curiosity.
