July 17, 2025 | Chicago, IL — A dramatic scene unfolded at the Cook County Criminal Court today when a man fainted moments after hearing his prison sentence.
Daniel Reyes, 42, collapsed in the courtroom as Judge Melissa Harding handed down a 40-year sentence for first-degree fraud. Reyes, who had pleaded not guilty, was visibly tense during the proceedings and appeared disoriented as the verdict was read aloud.
According to witnesses, Reyes began swaying on his feet shortly after the sentence was announced. “He just went pale and dropped before anyone could catch him,” said courtroom observer Sandra Klein, who was seated two rows behind the defendant.
Medical personnel were immediately called to the scene, and Reyes was evaluated by paramedics in a nearby courthouse medical room. He regained consciousness shortly after and was later escorted out under supervision, his wrists in handcuffs.
Reyes was convicted for his role in a large-scale financial scheme that prosecutors say defrauded investors out of more than $2.3 million. His defense attorney, Maria Gill, had argued that Reyes was a victim of manipulation by senior partners in the firm and plans to file an appeal.
“This outcome is devastating to Mr. Reyes and his family,” Gill told reporters outside the courthouse. “We maintain that he was not the primary actor in this case, and we intend to pursue every legal avenue available.”
The court has ordered Reyes to begin his sentence immediately. His reaction has sparked discussion on the emotional toll of courtroom verdicts, particularly in high-stakes financial crime cases.
No further health complications have been reported at this time.
