A man narrowly escaped serious injury today after being pulled into a pit of thick mud while attempting to fix a broken sewer line in a residential neighborhood.
The incident occurred around 10:30 AM on [Street Name], where the man, reportedly a local plumber in his 40s, was working to unclog a blocked drainage pipe. According to eyewitnesses, he had descended into a deep maintenance pit filled with water and debris when the unstable ground gave way beneath him.
“He was waist-deep in mud and trying to clear the pipe manually,” said one resident who witnessed the scene. “Suddenly, the ground shifted, and he sank almost up to his chest. It looked like the mud was swallowing him.”
Emergency services were quickly called to the scene. Firefighters and rescue workers managed to pull the man out after a tense 20-minute effort using ropes and support equipment. He was covered in sludge but appeared conscious and alert.
Authorities say the man was taken to a nearby hospital for evaluation but is expected to make a full recovery. Preliminary reports suggest the incident was caused by a combination of heavy rainfall in recent days and poor soil stability around the old sewer infrastructure.
Residents have raised concerns about the condition of the neighborhood’s underground utilities, urging the municipality to conduct inspections and carry out necessary upgrades.
City officials have yet to comment on the incident.
