A single mother of four small children decided to buy a used car so she could get to work. The car’s previous owner asked her to open the trunk once she got home. What she found inside would change her life forever.
Jennifer was a single mother of four young children after her husband, Adam, left her when he found out she was pregnant with their fourth child.
— “Another mouth to feed? No way! I’ve had enough!” — he shouted one day before storming out of their trailer and filing for divorce.
After the separation, Adam stopped sending money for the kids. He claimed he couldn’t find a job because he hadn’t finished college.
Soon after giving birth, Jennifer had no choice but to find work, as she barely had enough money for food, diapers, and milk. She walked through streets full of restaurants and shops, asking for a job, but most owners turned her down because she had four small children.
— “It’s hard to hire mothers with small kids,” one employer told her bluntly. “Something always comes up — a sick child, no babysitter, missed days. Sorry, it’s too much for us.”
Since no one in her neighborhood would hire her, Jennifer started looking in a nearby city. With the little money she had left, she took a taxi and asked her neighbors to look after her children for the afternoon.
When she arrived, she saw a “Help Wanted” sign for a cleaning position at a local hotel. She walked in, applied for the job, and was hired on the spot.
— “We urgently need staff, especially for the summer season. In a couple of weeks, we’ll be fully booked,” the HR manager explained.
Desperate to earn an income, Jennifer accepted the job even though it meant traveling to another city every day. She thanked the manager and went home to tell her kids that she had finally found work.
But after spending almost $30 on the taxi, she realized she couldn’t afford that expense daily. She needed her own car, even though she had no money to buy one. Her only option was to get a used car.
She found one, but she doubted the owner would agree to lower the price.
— “Could you possibly sell it to me for $5,000? You see, I’m a single mother of four, and it’s really hard to earn a living. I need the car to work in the neighboring city,” she said honestly.
When the owner learned she was raising four kids alone, he agreed.
— “If you can pay tomorrow, I’ll let it go for $5,000,” he said.
Jennifer was beyond grateful. She went to the bank to request a loan, but it was denied due to her bad credit history.
With few options left, she sat down to think. Moving wasn’t possible — her oldest son, Ethan, had just started school near their trailer park, and rent in the other city was much higher. Plus, she couldn’t take her mobile home with her. She needed the car to commute and pick up her children from school and daycare.
Then she remembered the family heirloom her late mother had left her — a gold necklace passed down through generations. It broke her heart to sell it, but she knew it was necessary for her children’s future.
She took the necklace out of its jewelry box and went to a pawn shop.
— “I’m sorry, Mom. I have to do this,” she whispered.
The necklace was valued at $5,500. Jennifer felt relieved — she could buy the car and still have a little left for daily expenses.
The next day, she returned to the dealership and handed over an envelope with $5,000.
— “Thank you for agreeing to sell it to me, sir. You have no idea how much this will help my kids and me,” she said.
The owner, who introduced himself as Jeff, smiled.
— “Congratulations on your purchase. It’s an excellent car,” he replied.
While Jennifer was signing the papers, Jeff discreetly placed something in the trunk. Before she left, he said:
— “By the way, check the trunk when you get home. I left something for your kids.”
Jennifer started working and driving her children to school and daycare, completely forgetting about checking the trunk. Until one day, she found a note in the glove compartment:
“I hope you and your children enjoy the gift I left in the trunk. May it be of great help to you.”
Curious, she got out of the car and opened the trunk. At first, she saw nothing — just a white envelope in one corner. When she picked it up, she realized it was the same envelope she had given Jeff with the money. She opened it… and inside were the $5,000 — untouched.
Jennifer burst into tears. She couldn’t believe the man’s generosity. After work, she drove straight to the dealership to thank Jeff.
He looked at her with a calm smile.
— “Life tests us, Jennifer. We can either give up or stand tall. I’m proud of you for staying strong for your kids. I thought you needed that money more than I did. Just promise me one thing — pay it forward someday.”
