In a case that has shocked the nation, two teenagers — 18-year-old Jesus Ayala and 16-year-old Zamir Keys — were charged with the murder of 72-year-old Andreas Probst, a retired police chief, after deliberately running him over with a car.
The tragic incident occurred one evening when Probst was cycling alone along a quiet road. According to prosecutors, Ayala urged Keys to strike the elderly man with their vehicle, assuring him that no one would ever find out. Moments later, Keys accelerated and hit Probst, knocking him to the ground before the car’s tires crushed his chest and left hand.
The teens laughed as they sped away, recording part of the act. Probst’s Apple Watch automatically alerted police, but despite the rapid response, he succumbed to his injuries.
In a haunting tribute, Probst’s widow wore his shattered Apple Watch to court — the same one that called for help on the day of his death.
During their court appearance, both teens laughed and showed no remorse, even as the charges were read aloud. Authorities later released an audio recording of Ayala from the back of a police car, where he joked, “Is it really that serious? … I’ll be gone like 30 minutes. Might be out of juvie in 30 days.”
The judge later handed down a lengthy sentence to the now 18-year-old Ayala, marking a grim end to a senseless act of violence that has left a community outraged and a family forever broken.
