When 34-year-old American hiker Alec Luhn set out on a solo backpacking trip near Norway’s breathtaking Folgefonna glacier, he never imagined it would turn into a fight for his life. But after six days lost in the remote, rugged terrain, his ordeal ended in a dramatic rescue — and the survival tactics he used shocked even seasoned rescuers.
A Trek Gone Wrong
What began as a peaceful hike turned into a nightmare when Alec lost his way in the maze of cliffs, boulders, and rushing streams. With little food left and no way to signal for help, each day became a battle against hunger, exhaustion, and the unforgiving mountain weather.
The Survival Gamble
Instead of panicking, Alec used his instincts — and sheer determination — to stay alive. He rationed the last of his food, drank from mountain streams, and used rocks, branches, and a thin sleeping pad for makeshift shelter against the freezing rain. Most importantly, he stayed visible, moving into open areas when he heard helicopters in the distance.
At one point, Alec even used brightly colored gear and improvised signals to try to catch attention. Rescuers later revealed this creative thinking may have been what ultimately saved his life.
The Rescue
After nearly a week with no sign of him, Norway’s elite 330 Squadron Search and Rescue team spotted Alec from the air. A dramatic video shows him in a red jacket, frantically waving ropes and signaling for help. Within moments, he was hoisted to safety — battered, dehydrated, but alive.
A Story of Resilience
Rescue officials called his survival “remarkable,” given the cold and stormy conditions. Friends and family back home say they’re not surprised — Alec has always been adventurous and determined.
This harrowing ordeal is a reminder of the power of human resilience — and the importance of preparation when venturing into the wild.
