The tension inside the California courtroom reached a breaking point Monday as Diana Lovejoy collapsed moments after a jury found her guilty in a chilling murder-for-hire plot targeting her then-husband. The verdict marked the dramatic conclusion of a case that had gripped the community for years, rooted in betrayal, custody battles, and a calculated attempt on a man’s life.
Prosecutors said Lovejoy orchestrated the attack during a bitter divorce from her husband, Greg Mulvihill. The couple’s relationship had deteriorated rapidly, with disputes over custody of their young son escalating into intense legal conflict. Investigators believe those tensions ultimately drove Lovejoy to seek a deadly solution.
The plot unfolded in September 2016, when Mulvihill was lured to a remote trail in Carlsbad under the pretense of retrieving a “secret” package. Instead, he was ambushed and shot. Despite suffering serious injuries, Mulvihill miraculously survived the attack, later providing crucial testimony that would help dismantle the conspiracy against him.
Authorities quickly uncovered that Lovejoy had enlisted the help of her firearms instructor, Weldon McDavid Jr., to carry out the shooting. Prosecutors argued that McDavid, posing as a hired killer, carried out the attack in coordination with Lovejoy, who they said carefully planned every detail.
Throughout the trial, the prosecution presented a trail of evidence, including recorded conversations and emails that outlined the alleged plot. Jurors were told that Lovejoy had gone to great lengths to conceal her involvement, even attempting to frame the attack as an unrelated incident. The defense, however, argued that the evidence was misinterpreted and insisted she had no intent to kill.
The jury ultimately sided with prosecutors, delivering a guilty verdict that included charges of attempted murder and conspiracy. As the decision was read aloud, Lovejoy reportedly became visibly shaken before collapsing in the courtroom, a moment that underscored the gravity of the outcome and brought an already emotional trial to a shocking close.
Mulvihill, who survived the near-fatal attack, later spoke about the ordeal, describing the physical and emotional toll it had taken on him. His survival and willingness to testify were central to the case, providing jurors with a firsthand account of the ambush that nearly cost him his life.
The case has since been cited by authorities as a stark example of how domestic disputes can escalate into extreme violence. With the conviction secured, prosecutors emphasized that justice had been served, bringing a measure of closure to a case defined by deception, survival, and a plan that ultimately failed.
