Las Vegas was turned into a scene of unimaginable horror when a gunman opened fire on thousands of people attending an outdoor country music festival, creating what became one of the deadliest mass shootings in modern American history.
The attack happened on the night of October 1, 2017, during the Route 91 Harvest music festival near the Las Vegas Strip. Thousands of fans had gathered for what was supposed to be a night of music and celebration when rapid bursts of gunfire suddenly began raining down on the crowd.
Authorities later determined that the shooter, identified as 64-year-old Stephen Paddock, was firing from suites on the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay hotel. From his elevated position overlooking the festival grounds, Paddock fired more than 1,000 rounds toward concertgoers below.
Chaos erupted almost instantly.
Terrified people ran for cover while others dropped to the ground, unsure where the bullets were coming from. First responders, police officers and ordinary concertgoers rushed to help the wounded as emergency crews flooded the area.
The final official death toll eventually rose to 60 victims, excluding the shooter. More than 400 people suffered injuries caused by gunfire or shrapnel, while the total number of people injured—including those hurt during the panic and evacuation—reached approximately 867.
For several terrifying minutes, investigators struggled to determine the location of the gunman. Police eventually traced the shots to the Mandalay Bay hotel and moved toward Paddock’s room.
By the time officers entered, Paddock was already dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Investigators discovered numerous firearms inside his hotel suites, triggering an enormous investigation into how the attack had been prepared and, most importantly, why it happened.
Years later, one of the most disturbing questions surrounding the massacre remains unanswered.
Why did Stephen Paddock do it?
Despite an extensive investigation into his background, finances, relationships and activities before the shooting, authorities were unable to establish a definitive motive. The FBI’s behavioral analysis examined possible explanations but did not identify one clear factor that fully explained the attack.
The massacre left a permanent mark on Las Vegas and sparked national discussions about public-event security, firearms regulations and the devices capable of allowing certain weapons to fire extremely rapidly.
But beyond the investigations and political debates were hundreds of families whose lives changed forever.
